Dental Implants

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a great way to replace one or more of your missing teeth. Rather than wear a partial denture or have to compromise surrounding teeth, an implant works on its own. Implants are made of titanium, and they work by replacing the root system of the missing tooth. Once healed, a restoration like a crown or bridge can be placed over the top of the implant.

Why might Dental Implants be needed?

The reason you might need a dental implant is because you’re missing a tooth. Implants are ideal in that they can be used to hold onto single crowns, fixed bridges and even complete overdentures. Implants help to restore your smile and improve overall oral functionality. It’ll be easier for you to eat, chew and speak when your smile is full and healthy-looking.

Who is a candidate for Dental Implants?

The way that implants work is by being embedded deep into the jawbone. Over the course of a few months, the implant will actually fuse with this bone. In order for this to occur, you need enough healthy and solid bone in the area where the implant is going to be placed. If you are missing bone, we may recommend that you have a bone grafting done prior to having implant surgery.

What happens during the Dental Implant procedure?

Implant surgery begins with anesthetic or sedative of your choosing. We make an incision through the gums and then insert the titanium implant deep into the jawbone. The implant will take about three to six months to fully heal and fuse with surrounding bone. From there, we will make a new crown, bridge or overdenture for the freshly healed implant. This will help to restore your smile and improve the way that you look. Implants can easily last for decades without needing any type of special care, repair or maintenance to keep them looking their best.
