How Painful Is It To Have a Tooth Extraction?

If you have had an injury or trauma to a tooth, and have been told you need your tooth extracted, you may wonder how painful the procedure will be. Due to today’s technology, tooth extractions can be done easily while the patient is relaxed and comfortable. At R2 Center for Dentistry Broken Arrow, we use the latest technology and techniques to ensure our patients have a positive experience. We are the leading dentist in Broken Arrow, OK and we always welcome new patients to our practice.

Why Is Tooth Extraction Needed?

Tooth extraction may be necessary due to infection, decay, or trauma. Our goal is to always preserve your tooth, but in some cases the damage is too severe, and removal is required. If you leave a tooth that needs to be extracted, this can lead to further discomfort or infection. Our team at R2 Center for Dentistry always puts our patients’ health first, and we will go above and beyond to ensure you receive exceptional care.

What Can I Expect During the Procedure?

When a patient begins their tooth extraction procedure, local anesthetic is used to keep the patient pain free and comfortable. We rock the tooth back and forth to gently loosen the tooth. Patients may feel some pressure, but should not feel any pain. If the tooth is impacted a small incision in the gum may be required, and sutures may be needed. Once the tooth is removed, we hold gauze in place to stop any bleeding.

Our team will discuss at home care with you after your procedure. Patients may experience some swelling or tenderness around the tooth and mouth, but this should subside after a few days. We recommend patients avoid using a straw to ensure the blood clot stays in place. Patients should also avoid tobacco products, and should follow a soft food diet for the first week of recovery.

Patients can gently rinse with salt water each day to help sanitize the extraction site, and keep bacteria away from the area. After a few days patients can resume their normal oral hygiene routine, but should be careful around the extraction area. Once you are healed, we will have you return to our office to discuss tooth replacement options to restore your smile.
