Tooth Extraction
What is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction will involve removing a natural tooth entirely from your mouth. In all cases, we try our best to preserve natural teeth as much as possible. Unfortunately, some teeth are beyond the point of being saved and leaving them in can be detrimental to your oral health. We aim to make the extraction process as easy, quick and painless as possible.
Why might a Tooth Extraction be needed?
A tooth might have broken severely or is loose due to gum disease. It’s not uncommon for patients with advanced gum disease to need multiple extractions before a denture can be made for them. Likewise, certain teeth aren’t necessarily damaged or decayed, but their presence poses a threat to your dental health. This is often the case with impacted wisdom teeth and stubborn baby teeth that aren’t falling out on their own.
Who is a candidate for a Tooth Extraction?
To determine if an extraction is needed, we will examine your teeth and take x-rays. If possible, we will try to save the tooth by offering other treatments. If a tooth needs to be removed, we’ll recommend coming in to have it taken out as soon as possible. This prevents further damage to the tooth and the surrounding tissue.
What happens during a Tooth Extraction?
The extraction process is quite simple and done easily in our office. We first numb the area of the mouth using a local anesthetic. We then work to loosen and lift the tooth from its underlying socket. If need be, we will place sutures at the time of the extraction. Sutures aren’t always necessary, so this will be determined at the time of the surgery. We then have you bite down on gauze to stop any bleeding. You’ll be provided with aftercare instructions so that the area is able to heal quickly and properly at home.
