Wisdom Teeth Removal
What is Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Wisdom teeth will normally begin to develop around the time a person is about 18 years old. If your mouth doesn’t have enough room for these third molars to come up on their own, they will become impacted underneath the gums. Impacted wisdom teeth can be incredibly painful and cause many dental-related problems down the line. This is why we recommend taking out wisdom teeth as soon as it’s found they’re a problem.
Why might Wisdom Teeth Removal be needed?
The reason you might need to have your wisdom teeth removed is because they’re impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth can be painful and become infected over time. In more serious cases, they can even push against surrounding teeth, causing damage and abscessing. Removing these wisdom teeth can help to put a stop to these problems or prevent them from happening in the first place.
Who is a candidate for Wisdom Teeth Removal?
To determine if you need to have your wisdom teeth taken out, we will take x-rays and perform an exam. X-rays allow us to see if the wisdom teeth are impacted and if so, where they are currently located. If you need your wisdom teeth removed, it is a good idea to come in for surgery as soon as possible. The best way to protect and maintain good oral health is by removing these problematic wisdom teeth.
What happens during the process of Wisdom Teeth Removal?
The extraction procedure begins with anesthetic or sedative of your choosing. If you’ll be having all four wisdom teeth removed, we will more than likely recommend a general anesthetic. We make an incision through the gums to remove the underlying wisdom tooth. We will place sutures immediately after the wisdom tooth is removed. We then repeat the process for any and all wisdom teeth that have to be taken out. You can expect minor pain and swelling for a couple of days following oral surgery.
